As Christmas creeps ever closer like a particularly festive spider on your wall while you’re asleep, ready to feast on your innards (Innards being money, and sleep tight!), my list of ideas continues to shrink. So with that lazy preface out of the way, here are the nine best quotes, or fountains of quotes, in all the anime that I watched this year. My reasoning? 9 kind of looks like a lowercase Q. Since I don’t think there are any questions, let’s begin!
9. “Ehhhhhh?”- Annaka Haruna and others, Nichijou
Wow Nichijou is turning up a lot in these posts. Anyway, this is the single best line of dialogue to ever come out of that amalgamation of charm and randomness. There are many times where it obeys the Law of Comedic Repetition, when something is repeated so many times that it stops being funny but then gets funny again, and reaches the point where even a screenshot of the character in question saying the line sends me into fits of hysterics, which prompts me to think “Ehhhhhh?” in response. If any line could make one part of the Borg Collective, this would be it with its sheer simplicity and infectious nature.
8. “Fetishes are the first step to happiness!”- Narumi Nakuru, Mayo Chiki
Never before has a throwaway line been so indicative to the attainment of happiness. One must first accept oneself and one’s vices for one to reach a state of oneness with oneself. But it can only happen once, with one fetish. Fuck I’m tired, moving on!
7. “Fuck”- Death Records Manager, Detroit Metal City
2011 was my first year of exposure to Detroit Metal City, among other things, and the band’s manager had some of the best lines in recent memory. They usually were along the lines of “I’m wet!” or “Stop being such a wimp!” in much more vulgar terms, but her constant utterance of “Fuck!” never lost its charm. It’s one of the reasons that every time she was onscreen, I was laughing for the entire duration. She could have inserted “Fuck” in between each word, and I still would have giggled uncontrollably.
6. Anything that comes out of Rider’s mouth- Rider, Fate/Zero
If each of these characters thus far delivered pithy one-liners or lines said with such repetition that they kept being funny long after they should have been, Rider is a comparable font of wisdom. Anything that comes out of the King of Conquerors’ mouth is a way to make the audience care for him more and more, and it makes rooting for his victory seem like the absolute best choice, even when we know that Saber has to win. While he doesn’t have anything in particular that stands out, at least to me, it’s the quantity that makes him a force of charisma to be reckoned with.
5. “This here’s a Berretta M92 custom, the Pret Chad Sword Cutlass Special. Now watch those cans carefully you brats”- Revy, Black Lagoon: The Second Barrage
I found myself warmed up to the second Black Lagoon series far more than the first, in part because of the supreme QUALITY of Revy’s English. I don’t think they made any effort to make her sound remotely American, and I can’t help but love it as much as I cringe at it. Just watch the video.
4. “Universe!”- Sena, Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai
This line wasn’t so much brilliant, as the timing completely caught me off guard. It tried to follow up the success with “Excalibur!” in a later episode, but it didn’t quite capture the ‘smacked by a verbal bus’ feel of “Universe!”
3. “She’s a 3D girl with a 2D heart!”- Daru, Steins;Gate
The slovenly otaku stereotype Daru said this rather perplexing description in response to a woman who he has an attraction to. However, it sounds more like a horrible medical disorder than anything, worrying me a bit for her health. Well, it would if Feyris weren’t insufferable. Don’t end up like Feyris, folks; finish school and get a job as far away from her as possible, in the fourth dimension if need be. I hate Feyris.
2. “Would you like to make a contract with me?” or some variation thereof- Kyuubey, Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica
The seemingly innocuous if heavy words that eventually came to have grave consequences for those who accepted, there isn’t a fan of the show who doesn’t shudder whenever Kyuubey’s deceptively innocent voice utters this damning phrase. This is less because I found it amusing or fitting, but because it will probably be the one line that people will remember from this year after the rest of the fare has been long forgotten. For longevity, if nothing else, this takes second place.
1. “Seizon Senryaku!”- Possessed Himari Takakura, Mawaru Penguindrum
It’s the line that warped reality, started an adventure for two brothers, and inadvertently led to a repeated attempt of a terrorist attack with an odd penguin theme. It’s difficult to elaborate on the significance of this further without giving away massive spoilers, something that I’m trying to avoid for this post, but trust me, dear readers who haven’t yet gotten to a certain point in Penguindrum, that this line has far greater repercussions than you know.
It’s for the power that it wields in universe and the slew of sort-of memes that were generated out of it that makes this my choice for quote of the year.
