Remember when I said in the first of my 12 Days series of posts that Nichijou only had five or so sketches that made me laugh or chortle in some way? Well I did, and I thought that it was the best idea for a post ever. However, I now see that I’m mistaken, but I don’t want to admit that to myself and do this post on something that will actually be well thought out and articulate. So here we go, my top five Nichijou sketches! That’ll show me!
Each of these is accompanied by Youtube clips, so that’ll help pad this post out somewhat and allow me to indulge in my laziness. And yes, they’re almost all Mio and Yukko. Professor and Nano had quantity, but Mio and Yuuko had quality. So enjoy while the clips are still up and available for viewing!
5. Fire Alarm
I have absolutely no idea why the fire alarm scene amused me so. Maybe it’s the simplicity of pressing a button, realizing that it works, and having an appropriate expression in response. That wasn’t a funny explanation, but that’s why we watch comedies rather than listen to me ramble on about them! Moving on!
4. Coffee Order
There are actually two funny parts to this: One where Yukko goes into the coffee shop totally clueless and ends up ordering something so miniscule that it barely qualifies as a drink, and one where she drags Mio there thinking she’ll do the same. I chose the latter because… well dammit, just look at Yukko’s face. That face…
3. The Wooden Cube/Pigtails Fantasy Segments
These are the very definition of unfunny jokes that go on for far too long before becoming funny again by the time the punchline rolls around. The buildup is agonizingly boring and the story itself is incredibly stupid… right up until the very end. In short, these gags manage to straddle the border of just plain inanity before skyrocketing back up and making me laugh. That takes skill and excellent timing.
2. The (Repeatedly) Failed Jump
Repetition is the key here to making it amusing. Again and again Mio pulls the same stunt, going way off course in her effort to jump over the bar. Eventually it gets so absurd that I can’t help but laugh. I think that’s all there is to say here, so just finish watching the clip before moving onto…
1. The Shrine Scene
There’s something about this that makes me laugh much more than any of the other scenes. That something is most likely those faces again.
Well, that should cover it. Tomorrow it’s back to the usual post length as I actually have to think about what I’m going to write about. Until then, I guess you can watch these a few more times, get a few more yucks out of Nichijou. Who knows, maybe these jokes are a lot better in retrospect, since it took me awhile to really appreciate them. Either way, Nichijou’s awesome, any and all of my readers should see it if they haven’t already. It may not be the epitome of comedy anime, but it has many moments of brilliant simplicity that are difficult not to get at least a smile out of.
