Jormungand did what we all thought was impossible: inserting a beach episode in a show not revolving primarily around high school students. Oh, also there’s a conflict with Balkan highwaymen with significant pull in the government over a delivery of humanitarian aid, and Koko’s grey morality definitely shines through the whole debacle, but fuck that noise, it’s half of a beach episode! Though I admit, it’s difficult to imagine Koko not bursting into flames when exposing most of her body to the sun like she does here. Anyway, it’s a fairly pedestrian episode, aside from how it hints at the potential insecurities lurking behind Koko’s nearly perpetual smirk.
Up until this point, Koko hasn’t exactly been a spokesperson for the sheer variety of human emotion. About the only expressions that she seems capable of are self-satisfied smirking and childish petulance whenever her plans potentially go awry, which both go a long way toward showing how inexperienced she is in the grand scheme of things, despite somehow gaming the competition at every possible step. However, as shown through the flashback of one of her teammates, she may not see the entire thing as lightly as it would appear. While it isn’t built on past this, instead making way for tooth-shattering shenanigans, it’s interesting to see a potential chink in the self-assured facade that she erects around others.
Unfortunately there isn’t much else to say about the episode, since it just seems to be building up to another action-heavy climax that hopefully won’t be as big a letdown as the Orchestra debacle, but at least it gave me some good mental images of the near-disturbing level of musculature in Koko’s crew, which is exactly what I didn’t need. So thanks to Jormungand, I guess.
