It’s no secret that Ano Natsu was a series that just didn’t work for me. It was a simple case of having all the necessary components, but not being able to put them together in a delicious enough pap for me to inhale like I did the vaguely similar Toradora and Ano Hana. Even after a strong, surprisingly clever finish that more than made up for any previous shortcomings in my mind, I can say that there was an itch that I expected this to scratch that it just didn’t have the ability to for a number of reasons… something that Toradora actually did. A lot of good shows are rounding the bend to a close this season, something that’s both thrilling and disappointing. However, much to everyone’s pleasure, a hefty group of bad shows are following suit, crashing and burning with reckless abandon regardless of previous quality. This is a post where I put my seldom-used power of clairvoyance to work predicting the endings coming up in around four weeks. I’ll also include how I think it should end, something that will most likely be terribly off the mark. Since this is for series not carrying over into spring, I won’t talk about Aquarion Evol or Mouretsu Piriates. So let’s retroactively fill our hearts with regret at what we’re about to do and get started! (more…)

Before you read on, I’d like to apologize if this post reads as something fragmented or hard to follow. I wrote it on very little sleep and threw it up on an impulse, so I haven’t had time to properly edit. Nonetheless, I hope it’s a decent enough read.

Anime and I haven’t been the best of friends for the several years that I’ve been following it like a dazzled puppy. I think this is less a fault with the series and more with how I’ve experienced life. (more…)

If what I said in my previous Ano Natsu post is true and it’s nothing but the festering corpse of Onegai Teacher with an Ano Hana skin graft, then they’ve sure as hell done a good job of dressing it up and making it presentable for show time. Sure, the occasional whiff of decaying mass remind us that this isn’t quite as fresh as it could be, but there’s no denying that with a skilled puppet master pulling the strings/sticking their hand in unsanitary recesses for the purpose exercising of control, it’s surprisingly well done. There are three points that I’ll cover here, since I can’t for the life of me flesh any of them into full-fledged ideas and still want to get them across. (more…)

Working title: Not-Jinta and Not-Mizuho Make a Porno

Ano Natsu de Matteru, or “We Are Not Fucking Onegai Teacher” as I assume it was meant to translate to, is the unholy lovechild of the aforementioned Onegai Teacher and the aesthetic sensibilities of director Tatsuyuki Nagai and character designer Masayoshi Tanaka, whose influences in Ano Hana bleed over to create an oddly uncanny effect. To put it bluntly, it’s like if somebody exhumed the rancid corpse of Onegai Teacher, stripped off the desiccated flesh, grafted on the still supple skin of Ano Hana, then put on a drunken ventriloquist show with the now desecrated body for an audience of equally drunken otaku. And me. (more…)
