Mirai Nikki, from start to finish, has been one long string of contrivances ranging from somewhat plausible (Yuuki distracting psychotic cult leader by throwing a red ball at her that just happened to conjure up childhood memories) to completely impossible under non-Mirai Nikki circumstances (Every single fucking one of the last five episodes). It’s a show that isn’t afraid to break its own rules without explanation in order to keep things exciting, something that it does with reckless abandon and with enough regularity to completely negate whatever string of logic that it’s holding onto. As some may remember, I spent the entirety of my first impressions post declaring Inu x Boku’s story a masturbatory fantasy for the mangaka, one where the bland self-insert character remains stoic in the face of a fawning admirer who she’s forced to be around for most of the day, before eventually falling for his “charm” and devotion bordering on obsessive. After all, pretty much everything pointed toward it being that kind of series, one that would inevitably disappoint with its lack of originality. Well, Inu x Boku seemed determined to prove me wrong, which it did for most of its run, until it gave up and spent the last two episodes spiting me for my raised optimism. However, the joke’s on it since I can’t say it worked all that terribly. (more…)

It’s no secret that Ano Natsu was a series that just didn’t work for me. It was a simple case of having all the necessary components, but not being able to put them together in a delicious enough pap for me to inhale like I did the vaguely similar Toradora and Ano Hana. Even after a strong, surprisingly clever finish that more than made up for any previous shortcomings in my mind, I can say that there was an itch that I expected this to scratch that it just didn’t have the ability to for a number of reasons… something that Toradora actually did. There are two kinds of crazy in this world: The easily plotted and recognized, like in this episode, and the balls to the wall holy fucking hell why did that happen kind that so defined last week. It was a combination of that and general sleep deprivation that kept me from blogging it, but I think I have a good handle on this week. I mean we’re pretty much repeating the Ghost of Christmas Past segment from A Christmas Carol, just with a message against miserly behavior replaced by unabashed insanity. Since I have absolutely no inspiration, I’m just going to take a page from Yahtzee and write it in limerick form with debatable rhymes. Enjoy! (more…)

This week marked possibly the greatest moment of the winter season. Fans worldwide most likely danced in the streets in jubilation, starting fires every which way with reckless and gleeful that still have glowing embers as I write this. That’s right, today marks a joyous occasion, in which both Black Rock Shooter and Guilty Crown have come to screeching and catastrophic ends.

Okay, so maybe celebrating the end of both shows wasn’t a good enough cause for wanton property damage, but it’s finally a sign that we can put both of these horrible shows behind us, letting them fester in the squalid realm of forgetfulness, something that I’ve been eager to do for quite awhile. But alas, there’s a reason that I dredge up painful memories of watching these animated abominations, and it’s not just that I want to reflect on how beautifully animated they both were. No, I want to answer the argument that’s been posed by nobody in particular: Which has the worst finale of the two? Well wonder no more, as I shall dig through the shit that encrusts both final episodes to determine this answer that has plagued my morbidly curious self. Here we go! (more…)

It’s the penultimate episode of Another, and that means that shit has to be ratcheted up to the highest levels of crazy possible. Of course, as it goes for the best of shows, the highest levels of crazy also coincide with the highest level of nonsensical crazy which are two totally different measurements as far as I’m concerned.  So, just for fun, I’d like to start the Another Episode 11 Choose Your Own Adventure, since writing a boring old episodic about every character’s qualification for the Darwin Award is too easy. Choice A is what I would have done in that situation that leads to some hope of salvation and ends your wacky adventure, while Choice B is the ‘Another’ choice that leads into the next question somehow. So let’s begin! (more…)
