There are two kinds of crazy in this world: The easily plotted and recognized, like in this episode, and the balls to the wall holy fucking hell why did that happen kind that so defined last week. It was a combination of that and general sleep deprivation that kept me from blogging it, but I think I have a good handle on this week. I mean we’re pretty much repeating the Ghost of Christmas Past segment from A Christmas Carol, just with a message against miserly behavior replaced by unabashed insanity. Since I have absolutely no inspiration, I’m just going to take a page from Yahtzee and write it in limerick form with debatable rhymes. Enjoy!

There once were diaries of the future
That drew people with delusions of grandeur
It was a god’s brilliant idea
Or so it would appear
But it opened wounds that couldn’t be sutured
After 23 episodes of distilled crazy
The sanity of which was just a bit hazy
It was thought it couldn’t get worse
What a silly supposition, of course
I hope the last three don’t get lazy
First there was the business with Yuno
Who’s just a bit off… as you know
Knowing that she traveled to the past
To kill her past self with an ax
Yeah there’s something special about this show
By implementing this brilliant plan
Yuno hopes to do everything she can
To reverse her past decision
Even through forced Yuuki-incision
There’s no way that this show will be bland
Then of course there’s the business with Mur-Mur
Who apparently wants to stop her
So she can take Deus’ throne
And prevent the destiny shone
But of course Yuuki’s not going to be her helper
Seeing Yuuki and Yuno have sex together
Really made me wonder what their relationship could weather
But of course Yuuki had to be killed
So Yuno’s plan wouldn’t bode ill
Somebody really needs to get this plot on a tether
Some may find this strange
Other words include weird, bizarre, and deranged
But personally I like the time travel angle
And the way motives get tangled
Sure beats the hell out of watching Lagrange
I have no idea what heights will be reached
Or whether compromise will be found for each
But all I can hope
Is that the ending can be coped
Either that or be an episode on the beach

Well, that should just about do it, I think. It was an episode that really ramped up the suspense as Yuno’s motivations were made even more unclear, and Yuuki’s chances of survival uncertain. I can only hope that it doesn’t fudge it at the end nearly as badly as people say it does, and it continues this trend of growing zaniness. Yet, even through all this, it paints Yuno as some kind of tragic figure warped beyond repair by what she’s witnessed, and warped even further by her obsessive devotion toward Yuuki. Long story short, I’ll definitely be looking forward to more.
I think by introducing the time-travel aspect into this series, the writer has really cheated the viewer. That came out of literally nowhere, and at this stage I think the writer can just pull any old twist out of his ass and the deluded people who love this series will eat it right up. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not hating on this series just for the sake of it. Right up until episode 8 or 9, for me this was one of the best series of the season. But the constant suspension of disbelief, Deus Ex Machina, plot holes etc. I have had to endure have made me come to hate the living shit out of this series.
I dont see how anyone can say this came out of nowhere, its foreshadowed from the first episode…
Correct. As well as Yuno’s preternatural sense of anticipation in many encounters with the other Diarists.
Time travel is a plot device that, when properly used, makes the story even more effective as a mystery or thriller. See Steins; Gate or certain episodes of Haruhi Suzumiya.
When poorly used, it becomes a deux ex machina (pun unintended) that had zero precedent and makes up for the writer having written himself into a corner. A copout of sorts, a reset that wipes out everything. See Dragon Ball
Have to agree that it was foreshadowed, or at least it isn’t quite as contrived as it seems. Still, it doesn’t leave much to write since I can’t really criticize it much. Then again, I have absolutely no expectations when it comes to Mirai Nikki, so maybe I’m not the best person to talk about this kind of thing.
